Seasoned grunge from a duo who’ve been around for less than a year.
It’s fair to say I’ve been excited to hear the debut track from this band for a while. Not to be confused with the other duo called Elephant, this all male duo have been established since 2013 through George and Marcus (that’s what their Facebook page entails). All the way back in April, the west midlands duo faced some trouble with formations, which halted the release. But now it’s all sorted and the end product is well worth the wait.
Their debut track is titled The Way It Is, and the almost shocking fact that it isn’t indie pop, (the religion of the midlands), is less shocking and more exciting, when the thought of another brilliant rock duo to follow Blood Red Shoes, Slaves and DZ Deathrays occurs. Grunge styled guitars open the track with violent kick drum beatings, as droned out vocals create a further distance from the stink of B-town pop.
We want to be like you, don’t want to die old
Live forever baby blue, you got a heart of gold
A new take on the cliché “We’re going to die young because that’s cool”. Conforming to the ones who don’t conform might seem pretentious. But when associated to this duo, it feels more real than from other beginning rockers. Perhaps it’s a salute to the dismissal of B-town indie pop, and the welcoming of a new era of real rock with the likes of Baby Strange and Darlia leading the way. Perhaps I’m reading into this too much. One thing for certain however, is that Elephant seem clear on their sound already. Blood Red Shoes effortlessly sharp presentation can be felt on the closing riff breakdown of the track, with a few seconds left for you to catch you breath from gasping in astonishment. Something this gripping on their debut track, is an achievement in itself and can only lead to further, enticing tracks from this up and coming duo.
