of Montreal – Empyrean Abattoir

Taken from the Georgia based, 13th album Aureate Gloom, Empryean Abbatoir is as ‘of Montreal-ist’ as you could possibly hope for.

Misplaced and unbalanced has been the perfect formula for of Montreal, with their indisputably identifiable, mix of 70’s psychedelic vocal styles and insane tone shifts. Beginning with something that sounds more like Phoenix on a downer, Empyrean’ gradually builds into swirling wormholes, of a supverted conciousness, before turning into the recognisable madness of previous of Montreal tracks. Kevin Barnes’ vocals remain as unstructured, yet structured, as ever, opening with swamped, monotonal annunciations, before rising into the ever familiar hyperactiveness that Kevin Barnes provides ever so perfectly.

Aureate Gloom is out March 3rd through Polyvinyl Records.
