Welcoming… Samm Henshaw

With the class of John Legend and the youth and creativity of Frank Ocean; 20 year old Londoner Samm Henshaw balances a mixture of pop and r’n’b, with sublime soul overtones. Soul is a rarity in this modern music environment. In fact, good soul is a rarity. Music that truly summons upon the emotion felt from the legends of soul such as Aretha Franklin and James Brown. Soul may have developed into a new contemporary (almost pop styled) form, but the energy felt from Henshaw, is the saving grace of the work of soul music’s finest artists.

On his latest single Better, Henshaw’s rises summon the artistic brilliance felt from John Legend’s love ballad All Of Me, but where as Legend provides solace in delicate piano tones, Henshaw truly ignites the fire of souls’ origins, with church organs amplifying the soul that the 50’s and 60’s were graced with. Equally on his previous single Redemption, Henshaw infuses past American genres into his contemporary soul-pop, placing slight forms of blues rock, with a classic harmonica playing out to the songs next progressions.

In Henshaw, you’ll find a progression that proudly looks back upon the past, seizes its grandest examples and tampers with these to create a new sound, that still remains nostalgic and enticing at the same time. A soul version of Palace if you will.
