Joel Culpepper – Thought About You

A throwback to the emergence of psychedelic soul in the ’70s, ‘Thought About You’ is Joel Culpepper’s love letter to duality and unity.

Working with producers Swindle (Ezra Collective, Mahalia) and Shawn Lee (Saint Etienne, Kelis) with mastering from Joker (Stormzy, Kojey Radical), the experience backed behind ‘Thought About You’ is present throughout every second of Culpepper’s fascinating track.

Inspired by the duality that comes with Culpepper being a Gemini, his latest track from the upcoming “Sgt Culpepper” album is a delicate blend of ’70s psychedelia, fused with soul, pop, R’n’B and more, as Joel explains; “Thought About You’ leads the charge for ‘The Love’ chapter on the record. This chapter represents a side of me that’s often seen on stage – impulsive, passionate and in the moment. I think this song is a reflection of all those things – I flipped the script from previous tracks in a nod to sensual psychedelic soul. I’d describe it as my take on a mid-70s head bop.

Directed by Sholto Price, the video for ‘Thought About You’ is an extension of this culture blending, employing the use of colour to amplify the ’70s sound, referencing waacking throughout before diving straight into a Parkinson style interview with Munya Chawawa. On paper, the ideas sound wildly unrelatable, yet with the help of Price, Pieter Synmans and more, Culpepper captures a likeness to OutKast’s video for ‘Roses’, utilising storytelling to bring all of his references together on this superb track and video.

Culpepper’s debut LP “Sgt Culpepper” is out July 23rd via Pepper Records.
